This checklist is designed to help you navigate your first 30, 60, and 90 days in your role, providing a roadmap to ensure a smooth transition and successful integration into the team. This checklist should be used as a guide and adapted to your specific needs and context.

**30 days**

- [ ] Meet with your team members and collaborators
- [ ] Meet your supervisor to clarify responsibilities and priorities
- [ ] Identify a mentor or buddy and set up regular meetings
- [ ] Familiarize yourself with the university's organisation and infrastructure
- [ ] Gain access to required systems (data, repositories, HPC/cloud resources, etc.)
- [ ] Learn about the RSE role within the university
- [ ] Understand local and central research infrastructure (e.g. compute, storage, data services)
- [ ] Learn about day-to-day work
- [ ] Identify opportunities for training
- [ ] Sign up for training

**60 days**

- [ ] Develop a solid understanding of the projects you are supporting
- [ ] Identify opportunities where your skills can add value to projects or teams
- [ ] Identify issues or pain points in workflows or processes
- [ ] Scope and agree on your contributions to current or upcoming projects
- [ ] Obtain feedback from your supervisor on progress and alignment with role expectations
- [ ] Plan for learning required or beneficial new skills
- [ ] Engage with the broader RSE or research community within the university

**90 days**

- [ ] Work independently on agreed tasks or project components
- [ ] Demonstrate ownership of at least one piece of work (e.g. feature, tool, workflow, or service)
- [ ] Strengthen collaborations with researchers and other support staff
- [ ] Obtain instructor certification for teaching in Carpentries
- [ ] Participate in knowledge sharing (e.g., DCC Coding Session)
- [ ] Reflect on your progress with your supervisor and identify goals for the next 6–12 months
- [ ] Provide feedback on the onboarding process and suggest improvements for future RSEs
